About the Avsec Card

Airport identity cards are required to carry out work in security areas and security enhanced areas at airports where the Director of Civil Aviation has specified that airport identity cards must be displayed.

The primary intent/benefit of this Avsec card is to enable you to have ready access to your aircraft at any time. Although traditionally, we have often been able to show our pilot’s licence to achieve this same effect, this is not a photo ID, which means that security staff have no way of checking that you are not using somebody else’s card.

Although this has primarily been more of a problem at just the international airports, as terrorist threats intensify, we can certainly expect to see more security around even provincial airfields. The main financial benefits are duty free discounts and hotel accommodation (domestic and international), both of which extensively provide up to 20% discount for airline crew.

Sales people or reception staff will immediately recognise (and carefully check) your Avsec card without further query because they are accustomed to seeing these on a regular basis. These discounts will more than pay for the fee for obtaining a very handy card. The card is valid for 3 years or until your NZ work / residency visa expires.
